Creating Christmas Displays That Feel Unmistakably Australian
For many Australians, our earliest memories of Christmas were shaped by imagery that came from somewhere else entirely.
Department store windows, television advertising and shopping centre displays presented scenes of glittering winter wonderlands of snow drifting across pine trees, families gathered around roaring fireplaces, Santa wrapped in fur-lined coats, and children warming their hands around mugs of hot cocoa. These magical visions were largely imported from Europe and the United States where Christmas naturally coincides with the depths of winter.
They were enchanting scenes, but they never quite matched the reality outside our own front doors.
Here in Australia, Christmas arrives in the height of summer. Instead of snowflakes, we have sunshine. Instead of woollen sweaters and sleigh rides, we have backyard barbecues, long days at the beach, backyard cricket and pavlova on the table. While the traditional imagery still carries nostalgia and charm, there has always been a subtle disconnect between the festive story being presented and the way Australians experience the season.
For organisations planning Christmas decorations and displays in public or commercial spaces, that creates an important opportunity. How do you capture the magic and warmth of Christmas while making it feel genuinely at home in Australia?
Why Traditional Christmas Imagery Can Feel Out of Place in Australia
Historically, Christmas styling in Australia has borrowed heavily from northern hemisphere traditions. Snow, icy blues, sleighs and winter foliage have all become familiar parts of festive decorating, even though they sit in contrast with our climate, colours and lifestyle.
That does not mean traditional Christmas décor has no place here. Classic Christmas elements still carry strong emotional resonance. But for many shopping centres, councils and corporate buildings, there is growing value in creating Christmas displays that feel more connected to local identity and sense of place.
A display that feels authentic to its environment can do more than look beautiful. It can strengthen emotional connection, encourage engagement and help people feel that the festive experience belongs to them.
What Makes a Christmas Display Feel Authentically Australian
Over the years, many attempts have been made to introduce a more “Australian” Christmas aesthetic. However, these often fall into a familiar trap of relying on caricatured stereotypes. Santa appears on a surfboard, reindeer are swapped for kangaroos, and the North Pole becomes Bondi Beach.
While these ideas may feel playful, they do not always deliver the sophistication, longevity or premium presentation needed in commercial and civic spaces.
Whether the setting is a shopping centre, a council precinct or a corporate building, Christmas displays need to feel thoughtful, polished and aligned with the surrounding environment. They should be visually engaging without becoming gimmicky.
An authentically Australian Christmas display is not about replacing every traditional symbol. It is about drawing on the shapes, textures and atmosphere that feel naturally connected to Australia, then translating them into festive design with elegance and restraint.

Inspired by the Australian Landscape
At Dec the Malls, this question became the starting point for a creative challenge: how could we design a commercial Christmas display collection that feels distinctly Australian, without leaning on obvious clichés?
The answer lay not in replacing traditional symbols with humorous substitutes, but in stepping back and re-examining the visual language of Australia itself.
Australia’s natural landscape offers an extraordinary source of inspiration. From the sculptural forms of native flora to the textures and silhouettes found throughout our unique ecosystems, the environment provides shapes and motifs that are instantly recognisable to Australians while also possessing a natural elegance that lends itself beautifully to large-scale design.
By studying these organic forms, our design team began developing a series of motifs inspired by iconic elements of Australian flora and natural objects. Shapes are reinterpreted through a contemporary design lens, enlarged, simplified and stylised into bold sculptural forms that capture the essence of their inspiration.
Strong leading lines and carefully balanced proportions ensure each piece retains a sense of harmony and sophistication. The result is a collection that feels both modern and timeless, a celebration of Christmas that is distinctly Australian without resorting to novelty.

The Role of Materials, Lighting and Form
Great Christmas display design is not only about concept. It also depends on how each piece is built and finished.
In our Australian Christmas Motif collection, each sculpture begins with a precision-engineered steel framework that delivers strength while maintaining a refined visual profile. A lustrous metallic gold powder coat adds festive warmth and reflects ambient light beautifully across a range of spaces.
Within the framework, 3D-printed eco-acrylic netting creates a delicate lattice that defines the form and catches light in subtle, shimmering ways. During the day, these surfaces softly reflect their surroundings. As evening approaches, integrated LED lighting transforms the sculptures again, adding a gentle twinkle that enhances shape and movement without overwhelming the design.
This balance between structure, finish and illumination is what allows a Christmas display to feel premium. The effect is festive, but also clean, elegant and architecturally considered.
Designing for Shopping Centres, Councils and Corporate Buildings
Flexibility is essential when designing Christmas displays for different environments.
Shopping centres often need installations that can work across grand atriums, centre courts, walkways and external arrival zones. Councils may require Christmas decorations for streetscapes, civic plazas, libraries, community hubs or public activation areas. Corporate buildings often need festive styling that suits foyers, shared spaces, lobbies and tenant environments.
A well-designed display collection should be able to work across all these settings.
Australian-inspired sculptural motifs are especially effective because they can stand alone as hero pieces or sit comfortably alongside traditional Christmas décor such as trees, garlands and lighting. They can add local relevance without disrupting the broader festive narrative.
Placed beside a grand Christmas tree, they create a striking focal point. Installed through public walkways or communal zones, they encourage photography and interaction. Used within a broader decorating scheme, they add texture, interest and a stronger connection to place.

Creating Memorable Christmas Experiences Through Thoughtful Design
The festive season remains one of the most valuable opportunities to transform a space and create lasting emotional connection.
For shopping centres, Christmas displays can help shape customer experience, encourage visitation and support seasonal engagement. For councils, they can contribute to civic pride, community participation and a sense of celebration. For corporate buildings, they can bring warmth, atmosphere and seasonal character to workplaces and shared environments.
Across every setting, the goal is similar: to create spaces that feel memorable, welcoming and joyful.
Thoughtful Christmas display design plays an important role in making that happen. When festive styling feels relevant to its location and audience, it has greater impact and becomes part of the experience people remember.
By drawing inspiration from the Australian landscape, Christmas displays can feel both timeless and distinctly local. The result is festive décor that captures the magic of the season while feeling unmistakably at home in Australia.
